How it Works

Happy Paws Veterinary Services

A healthy body is in homeostasis or balance. Illness, injury, and chronic stress can cause the body and the nervous system to become unbalanced.

Neuromodulation through veterinary medical ACUPUNCTURE is a key therapy used to bring the body back into a properly balanced state and is known to affect all major physiological systems.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture works primarily through the central nervous system (the brain), so it affects all functions of the body, including the spinal column, peripheral nerves, muscles, hormones, immune system, inflammatory responses, and major organs such as the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver and urinary bladder.

Acupuncture does more than relieve pain. Its effects depend on what conditions are being treated and which points are utilized. Acupuncture increases circulation and causes the release of many neurochemicals, which are critical parts of a functioning nervous system. Some neurochemicals released via acupuncture are endorphins––the body’s natural pain-management hormones. Endorphins relieve muscle spasms, stimulate nerves, stimulate the body’s defense systems, and provide numerous other beneficial effects.

Photobiomodulation, with therapeutic laser and LED, affects the systems of the body through local and systemic healing and pain relief by delivering the photons needed for cellular metabolism.

Medical massage contributes to local and systemic healing and pain management by manipulating fascia, muscles, and the lymphatic system and increasing blood flow.

Medical acupuncture, therapeutic laser, and medical massage all work together for safe, comprehensive, immediate, and long-term pain management, healing, and well-being.

Timing and Frequency

The length of a session depends on the animal’s comfort and mental state during the treatment. Acupuncture time may vary from just a few seconds to a few minutes and up to 30 minutes. A combined treatment of acupuncture, laser, and massage will vary from 30-60 minutes.

A common recommended treatment includes once-weekly sessions for 3 weeks and then every 2-4 weeks to continue supporting an older critter’s comfort, while young animals with recent injuries often resolve after just a few treatments.

Very painful and chronic conditions may initially require several treatments close together.
